Fearless Fred Jerome - The Hero

(May 21, 1824 - September 3, 1900)

Frederick Jerome was honoured as a hero in England and in America.  According to the San Francisco Call dated August6, 1900, "Captain Frederic Jerome had an enviable record for bravery and daring acts of heroism.  He was presented with the Freedom of the City of New York and an elegant suff box for saving lives in the wrecks of the Henry Clay and Ocean Monarch in the years 1846 and 1848.  Captain Jerome also saved the lives of the captain of the Lucky Star and his wife and children, who were wrecked on the coast of Formosa in 1862.  He was especially honoured by a present from Queen Victoria for his heroism in the British channel.  He was presented with a gold medal by the city of Liverpool, and was made a life member of the Pioneer Society of California by unanimous vote.  Captain Jerome has also saved many lives in the bay of Sanfrancisco and was in consequence well known and beloved here."

Fred Jerome was laid to rest in the Odd Fellow' Cemetery at San Francisco.   Fred had requested only a simple ceremony and the Ritual of the Pioneers was the service used.  The Masonic Quartet rendered several selections at the ceremony.

Frederick Jerome died on 3rd August 1900 at San Francisco.  There were no children from either marriage.  It is believed his medals were lost in the San Francisco Earthquake.
